Click, for a great podcast on REAL (min. 11% alc.) Lambrusco.
"[Real] Lambrusco is, of course, always red, and either dry [secco] or amabile (medium dry). The sweet red [rosso], white [bianco] and rose' [rosato] versions that can be found in supermarkets are as far away from real Lambrusco as British ice cream is from Italian."  - A Traveller's Wine Guide to Italy
"The Charmat method, which revolutionized Lambrusco production in the 60s and enabled it to go international (and also to go sweet, which it had never been before).
- Nicolas Belfrage MW, Life Beyond Lambrusco, 1985

Real Lambrusco (min. 11% alc.) may be 'fermo' (a still red wine) or 'frizzante' (charmat or ancestrale) or 'spumante' (charmat or metodo classico) or a 'rose secco/brut' (frizzante: charmat or ancestrale or spumante: charmat or metodo classic.)

"We...want to bring the quality message back,” Pellini [owner of Chiarli, one of Emilia's oldest and largest Lambrusco producers] told the drinks business.

“It’s a tough challenge as Lambrusco’s reputation was damaged so badly in the ‘70s and ‘80s with the cheap, low-alcohol versions sold in the UK [3%/4% alc. Bianco] and the US [7%/8% alc. Rosso/Bianco; Spain/Brazil: 7% alc. Rosato].

Our wines [Emilian Lambruscos] are nothing like that, the majority are dry [secco] and around 11% abv,” he added."

Celebrate Italy's
Coolest Red!

"Poor Lambrusco. In the 1970s and 1980s the sickly sweet, fizzy version was the biggest selling import wine in the US -- it became a bit of a joke. The good news is that the Lambrusco served everywhere in Emilia today is far superior, a tart, dry [secco, min. 11% alc.] red wine that makes a perfect compliment to Italian food (it's still fizzy, though)."

Countdown to Lambrusco Day

@seccoandred I love your website. I hope to celebrate Lambrusco day in my wine shop. It's becoming very popular. Thank you!

(Real) Lambrusco Milestones:
1994/1995...2005/2006...2009/2010

Fred Plotkin: "The image of the wines of [Emilia Romagna] was ruined by the Lambrusco exported in the 1970s. This bubbly wine can be tasty when well made, but what was sent abroad was inexpensive and generic and appealed to people who were just beginning to explore wine. But the Lambruschi [Lambruscos] that are consumed in Emilia Romagna are much more subtle." - Italy for the Gourmet Traveler, 2006

ALFONSO CEVOLA: "You find the oddest things on You Tube. Noodling around for my next post I came across this video of Tom Abruzzini  talking from North Beach in San Francisco...“On the first day”, as the saying goes, Tom was there. If you don’t believe me, take a load off and bear through his story on how Lambrusco won America’s heart....You  may not think every thing Tom says rings with your version of things (Tom is  passionate and polarizing at the same time), but it is a record."
