Lambrusco Day! June 21st, 2011.![]() "June 21st is National Lambrusco Day! If you haven’t had a chance to try a Lambrusco, then do yourself a favor and get yourself a glass on Tuesday, June 21st.
Lambrusco is a sparkling red wine from the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. This region is famous for being the gastronomic center of Italy (it is the home of Parmigiano- Reggiano, Balsamic Vinegar, and Prosciutto di Parma), so it should be no surprise that the wines of the region go well with a variety of foods, especially Italian. Lambrusco is the name of a grape, and a wine. So a Lambrusco wine is made from the Lambrusco grape. Traditionally, the wine is made in a frizzante style, meaning slightly sparkling. Often times this wine can be found in sweet incarnations, but a good Lambrusco is a wine that has generous fruit up front and finishes bone dry. While working at a boutique Italian wine shop a few years back, we sold cases and cases of this wine during the Hollywood Bowl season. Why? Because it goes with pretty much everything, and in general it’s a good picnic wine. It isn’t the most complex, intellectual wine in the world but, hey, sometimes all wine has to do is taste good. Wherever you find yourself on Tuesday, go out on a limb and get a glass of Lambrusco and see what I’m talking about. Try it with anything with a tomato sauce or a healthy amount of cheese. Pairing it with pizza is a lay up, try it with other dishes that have a tangy/fruity edge to them. Currently having a taste of our Caprari Lambrusco with our Chicken Delight, and it marries wonderfully with the smoked tomato chutney in the dish. By the way…this wine is lower alcohol than Champagne or sparkling wine, so that means finishing a whole bottle does not make you a lush." Rafael Sanchez Sommelier POP Champagne and Dessert Bar |
